The BL21-AI E. coli strain is derived from the BL21 strain and is intended for use as an expression host. The BL21-AI strain contains a chromosomal insertion of the gene encoding T7 RNA polymerase (T7 RNAP) into the araB locus of the araBAD operon, placing regulation of T7 RNAP under the control of the araBAD promoter. The araB gene is deleted in this strain. To induce expression from the araBAD promoter by using L-arabinose.
